Day 42 – Morning Session: Mathematics – Derivatives in Physics Applications – ECET 2026

In ECET 2026, Mathematics questions linked with Physics applications (motion, velocity, acceleration, force, etc.) are very scoring. Derivatives act as a bridge between Maths and Physics.

📘 Concept Notes

🌟 What is a Derivative in Physics?

  • A derivative measures the rate of change of a physical quantity.
  • In Physics, most formulas involving motion, forces, and energy use derivatives.

⚙️ Core Formulas

  1. Velocity from Displacement

 v = \frac{ds}{dt}

Acceleration from Velocity

 a = \frac{dv}{dt} = \frac{d^2s}{dt^2}

Newton’s 2nd Law (via derivative)

 F = m \cdot a = m \cdot \frac{dv}{dt}

Work Done (Force × Displacement)
If force depends on displacement:

 W = \int F(x) , dx

Power as Derivative of Work

 P = \frac{dW}{dt}

Momentum
 p = m \cdot v

 F = \frac{dp}{dt}

📐 Examples

Example 1:
If  s(t) = 5t^2 , find velocity and acceleration at  t = 3 , s .

  • Velocity:
     v = \frac{ds}{dt} = 10t
    At  t = 3 ,  v = 30 , m/s
  • Acceleration:
     a = \frac{dv}{dt} = 10
    Constant acceleration =  10 , m/s^2

Example 2:
If force  F(x) = 2x , find work done from  x = 0 to  x = 4 , m .

 W = \int_0^4 2x , dx = [x^2]_0^4 = 16 , J

🧠 Explanations

  • Q1 → D:  v = ds/dt = 3t^2 , at  t=2 \Rightarrow 12 .
  • Q2 → B: Acceleration is derivative of velocity.
  • Q3 → B:  a = dv/dt = 4 .
  • Q4 → A:  F = dp/dt .
  • Q5 → C:  W = \int_0^2 3x^2 dx = [x^3]_0^2 = 8 .
  • Q6 → C:  P = dW/dt .
  • Q7 → A:  v = cos t .
  • Q8 → B:  F = m \times a .
  • Q9 → C:  a = dv/dt = 2t, ; t=3 \Rightarrow 6 .
  • Q10 → A: Derivative of displacement w.r.t time = velocity (m/s).

🎯 Why Practice Matters

  • Derivative-based Physics applications are straightforward but often carry 2–3 marks.
  • Strong grip on velocity, acceleration, force, and work-energy derivatives ensures easy scoring.
